Howells has the largest criminal department in the Yorkshire and Humberside region and is one of the largest in the country. The department is continuing to expand and there are currently 18 qualified solicitors and 11 trainees/paralegals. All the fee-earning staff are specialists who have concentrated entirely on criminal defence work.

The Department undertakes the full range of criminal defence work, including white collar crime, large scale drug importations and homicides and is particularly well known for its expertise in youth crime, public order law and cases with a civil liberties/ human rights dimension. The Department is led by Danny Simpson, who is recognised as a leading Criminal Defence lawyer and works closely with the firm’s civil liberties department, undertaking work on miscarriages of justice, prisons law and judicial review work.

The department has a fully- fledged Crown Court department with two higher rights advocates enabling it to deal with much of its Crown Court advocacy.
