Yorkshire courts perform poorly in mediation league table
The courts in Yorkshire perform amongst the worst in the country suggests the latest government league table for mediations carried out under the National Mediation Helpline (NMH) . The NMH provides users with a low fixed fee time limited mediation. The statistics produced by the Ministry of Justice in July 2009 show West Yorkshire languishing near the bottom of the league tables next to Newcastle with only 6 mediations referred to the NMH compared with 63 from the Birmingham area, 46 from Manchester and 263 from London.
Anthony Glaister Chairman of the Association of Northern Mediators says ‘This is a clear indication that judges are not commending the scheme; the court administration isn’t publicising it, and the users don’t appear inclined to use it. Something has to be done to improve uptake as it provides an inexpensive and speedy mediation service particularly for low value claims.’
On the other hand the small claims free mediation service appears to be busier than ever.
