People who have worked with asbestos 'face uncertain future'
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned that employees who have worked with asbestos face years of uncertainty regarding their health.
This week, A&T Roofing was prosecuted for not providing members of staff with adequate protection when removing the substance from a warehouse in Middlesex.
According to HSE, the company displayed a cavalier attitude to its workforce that could lead to them developing conditions such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Sarah Snelling, an inspector at the watchdog, said that not everyone who has worked with asbestos goes on to develop such illnesses.
However, she noted that some of those who do remain undiagnosed for many years.
"All the men exposed, and their families, will have this hanging over them for the rest of their lives," Ms Snelling commented.
She added that the actions of A&T Roofing were "unpardonable".
According to HSE figures, three plumbers and 20 tradesmen die from asbestos-related illnesses every year.
