D.I.Y. Divorces, Bell & Buxton of Sheffield ask Is This The Way Forward?
Although there has been lots of talk regarding the end of the recession, the effects of this economic downturn will have far reaching consequences for everybody. It is a sad fact of life that a lot of marriages end in divorce and the depressed market had put enormous pressure on already struggling families to make ends meet. More couples are separating as a result and when this happens there are far reaching emotional and financial consequences for all involved. At Bell & Buxton we have noticed a trend towards people separating and attempting to do their own divorces and the reason for this is usually quite obvious; when couples separate due to financial difficulties the last thing they want to do is spend more money on legal fees. This isn’t however always the best option and it usually ends up costing the parties even more as we have noticed the trend by people asking our advice when things are going wrong. One major problem for example is that couples do not realise that simply getting a divorce does not end financial claims against the other spouse and that is dealt with by a separate but related set of proceedings known as ancillary relief proceeding.
The need for specialist legal advice is paramount. Our Family Department have recently launched a Free Legal Advice Clinic at the Beighton Lifestyle Centre. This is run once a fortnight and is open to anyone as a means of accessing free legal advice without the sometimes daunting experience of entering a solicitors’ office. We can provide guidance on all aspects of family law and beyond and provide advice and assistance relating to legal procedure. One of our aims in establishing the Clinic is to help and assist people through complex legal issues by providing a free initial consultation but we can also advise as to our fixed fee service in order to provide certainty with regards to costs in the event of any further work being needed.
